Do you have short/medium length natural hair? Are you struggling with perfecting your twist out? Do you know how to add volume to your twist out without using an Afro pick? Well, this post is definitely for YOU! I’m going to reveal to you all of my secrets for perfecting my twist out.
Tip 1: Style on Freshly washed hair
Styling your hair after its freshly washed is the first step to perfecting your twist out because it’s when your hair is the cleanest and has the most moisture. I won’t go into detail about my wash process. There’s nothing special that I do, but I will list the products that I’m currently using below:
Shampoo – Crème of Nature Natural Oil-Infused Hydrating Shampoo
Conditioner – Crème of Nature Natural Oil-Infused Hydrating Conditioner
Deep Conditioner – Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholesterol
Leave-in-conditioner – Crème of Nature Natural Oil-Infused Leave-in-conditioner
*All of the Crème of Nature products are from the Straight from eden collection
Tip 2: Parts & Layers
The second tip to perfecting your twist out is parting your hair in small to medium sized sections for twisting AND layering your hair so that your flat twist are one on top of the other (especially in the back half of your head. See styling video by @OnlyJMarie for clarification). Layering is the key to giving your hair the volume it needs without having to use an Afro pick.
Tip 3: Moisture, Moisture…MOISTURE!
Moisture is a very important part of perfecting your twist out. After washing and parting my hair, I follow the LOC method for moisturizing my hair before styling each section (i.e. apply product – twist section – apply product – twist next section – and so on). The products I use for the LOC method are:
Liquid – Water
Oil – Crème of Nature Plant-derived repairing oil (coconut, avocado & olive oils)
Cream – HairVeda’s Gellicious Hydrating Whipped Gelly (AMAZING!) OR Carol’s Daughter Healthy Hair Butter (LOVE!)
Tip 4: Detangle
Your hair should be fully detangled during the wash process; however after applying the moisturizing products above its good to comb through your hair once again to make sure the products are evenly distributed throughout your hair from root to tip. To get the most definition in your twist out this is a very important step. Don’t believe the hype Ladies…Combs are our friends!
Tip 5: Flat Twists
The next tip to perfecting your twist out is doing two strand flat twists. Remember to twist your hair in the direction you want your hair to lay. For example: If you want hair to lay in your face you will need to twist your two strand flat twists starting from the middle of your head to the front of your head so the hair will lay in that direction. Check out @YolandaRenee tutorial below on how to do flat twists and check out @OnlyJMarie tutorial (above) for a visual of the tips listed to perfect your twist out.
Tip 6: Unravel only when DRY
The last tip for perfecting your twist out is making sure your hair is dry before you unravel your flat twists. If your hair is dry proceed to unravel your twists slowly. Optional: you can apply a small amount of oil on your hands to assist with unravelling your flat twists. It’s not necessary. The key to avoiding frizz is taking your time to separate each flat twists.
If your hair is still wet, unraveling your twists will make it frizz and it will look a hot mess! What you can do is either sit under a hooded dryer for 30 minutes (or longer if needed) OR rock a protective style using a head wrap while you wait for your hair to fully dry.
