I get quite a bit of questions on how I get my hair to grow? I say for one keep your hair moisturized but also one of the keys to retaining length is protective styling. I know you might hear this a lot but it’s true. I mean for one having the “hands in the hair syndrome” leads to massive breakage and if your hair keeps breaking you will not be able to see your length. I know you or I do not want that. I would say over 80% of us love to be in our hair when it’s out. Would you agree? I guess maybe I should go back to the basics and tell you what a protective style is right? A protective style is when the ends of your hair are protected. Yep that simple. Being that your ends are the oldest part of your hair protect them as much as possible.
Does protective styles make your hair grow?
No not at all.
But, what it does do is help those beautiful hands of yours out of it. Also, it gives your hair a break to continue to grow. In my personal routine, I love having my protective style for the work week then having my hair out for the weekends. There are so many youtubers and pictures of protective styles that you can go through to find a great style. However, it can get downright overwhelming when having to look through constant pictures and videos. So, I picked out the top three youtubers who I consider my Protective Style Queens.
I had to start this list off with Millicent. She is my top queen of protective styles and updos. if I want to do a new chic updo this women is the first one i’m going too. This is her latest video with a fly chic style. As you can see, she has so much more styles on her youtube page that you have to check out.
Another way you can protective style is by adding sew-in weaves, crochet braids, box braids , havana twists etc…. It’s all about keeping the ends protected. What I would add when it comes to wearing weaves is to still take care of your hair underneath. Breanna is going to show you how to do any type of weave there is on her youtube channel . Even though weaves don’t do to well in my hair, it looks so beautiful on other naturalistas when they want a small break from taking care of their hair.
3. Tawanda J.
Tawanda is a new favorite of mine. I first spotted her on instagram with the flyest protective styles and I was just praying she had a tutorial. Low and behold she did I was too excited. She has this beautiful undercut and you would be amazed when it comes to the creativity she has with her styles. If you need a simple look for a protective style she is someone to take a look at.
