Last weekend, I (Bianca) attended VA Natural Beauty Hair & Health Mega Expo in Richmond, VA. It was such an amazing event full of Natural Hair and Beauty experts, vendors, bloggers, and curl friends from up and down the East Coast. Reflecting on the days’ events reminded me of how grateful I am to be amongst the chosen. Ya know today I’m known as a Natural Hair and Empowerment Blogger, Event Planner, and Apparel Creator; however, 6 years ago I was returning to the curl and had no clue how to care for my hair. And honey, I have the pictures to prove it. I’m talking lop sided fros and all. Lol
On a more serious tip, I am so grateful for those that came before Samantha and I in the RVA area like Keenya Kelly and ThikandKurly who had the first natural hair event I ever attended called Embracing Your Beauty in Richmond, VA around 2010/2011. The timing of their presence in RVA was so perfect because I transitioned 2009-2010 and had my big chop on July 30, 2010. Over time things evolved, but Keenya Kelly’s Return of the Curls and Lorna Kelley-Goode’s Virginia Natural Beauty continued to play a significant role in my journey of embracing my hair and myself. It was these women that inspired me to do the very things I’m doing now. THANK YOU!
While at the VA Natural Beauty Hair & Health Mega Expo I constantly heard God saying, “You’re right where I want you to be.” It was so refreshing to walk about and receive confirmation after confirmation. As I walked around the Expo I saw so many familiar faces of people we’ve connected with via Natural Power of HER from Justice Dwight Art, Monae of 804 Braids, Marla & Tezra from Naked Beaute, Teshara from Farasue’s Garden and so many more. It was just a blessing to see so many familiar faces and to know only God could have brought these relationships together.
Another message I received while at the expo is “It’s not about you, it’s about who’s watching you.” Believe it or not being transparent and vulnerable is a challenge for me. I’m one to have a select few that I confide in and that’s it. It could be the secretive Scorpio in me (I’ve heard that quite a few times), idk that’s just how I am. Now that I have this platform its helped me grow in areas I didn’t know I needed growth in. I will be the first to tell you I was the shy girl that would rather stay in the background working like a hebrew slave than to be front and center. I thought I belonged in the background (and that’s what others told me…I’ll save that for another post). God is constantly putting that old belief to rest as he stretches me beyond my wildest dreams. I just strive to stay connected to Him and open to however He sees fit to use me and Natural Power of HER to reach His people.
Last but certainly not least, the theme of self-acceptance and freedom ruminated throughout veteran blogger, Taren Guy‘s segment, “Deeply Rooted Beyond Beauty: A Journey to Hair Freedom and Acceptance.” Taren reminded us that pushing ourselves to do the things that make us uncomfortable is where growth happens and eventually those things that made us uncomfortable will become comfortable. Thus, positioning us into this never ending cycle of personal growth and freeing oneself as we challenge ourselves to constantly move past the uncomfortable to the comfortable. Taren confidently stated she is Free, yet free enough to know that she has to get more free. For those that don’t believe they are free, Taren challenged us to look inward and ask ourselves the tough questions such as: Why? What’s stopping you from being free? What action do you need to take? What does being free mean and look like for you? How will you know when you’re truly free? Of course, these are questions that only the person looking inward can answer for herself.
I say all of this to say, I’m so thankful for the journey that has brought me to this moment. To each and every one of you that take the time to read our blog posts, follow our social media handles, attend our events, and/or purchase our apparel….THANK YOU!
