- What products do you use?
I use a variety of products. The only products that I’ve consistently used for 8+ years are Africa’s Best Ultimate Herbal Oil, Cantu Shea Butter Leave-In conditioner, Eco Styler Olive Oil Gel (green top), and Hollywood Beauty Olive Cholesterol for deep conditioning treatments. As far as shampoos, conditioners, and crème/butters I have tried quite a few different brands. No matter the brand, I will always have these following products readily available:
- Sulfate free Clarifying shampoo
- Moisturizing conditioner
- Leave in Conditioner
- Deep Conditioner
- Styling cream
- Hair butter
- Where do you shop for natural hair products?
I normally purchase natural hair products at Target, Walgreens, Wal-mart, Epic Curls Boutique (Natural hair product store in Richmond, VA), and natural hair expos (i.e. Return of the Curls, Ubiquitous Trade Show, VA Natural Beauty, and of course Natural Power of HER events).
- How long have you been natural?
I’ve returned to the curl 5 years ago. July 30, 2010 to be exact.
- (When it’s straight) Is that your real hair? Why don’t you wear it like that all the time?
Well, in my 5 years of returning to the curl I’ve only straightened my hair 3 times. I can remember this because each time I went to the salon to let a professional do it because I was too scared of damaging my hair after hearing so many at-home heat damage stories.
I get the question of is my hair real because of the drastic differences in length within the same month. In its natural state (if I don’t do any stretching techniques) my hair is just shy of shoulder length. If I do a stretching technique my hair falls a little longer than shoulder length and if I straighten it my hair is close to bra strap length. I don’t wear my hair straight often because I simply prefer my curly hair.
- I hate shrinkage! How do you get more length to show?
I use stretching techniques. After shampooing and conditioning my hair, I will twist my hair into 8-10 flat twists or two strand twists. I will then pin the twists on the right side of my head to the left; and pin the twists on the left side of my head to the right. I l wear a satin bonnet and let my hair air-dry overnight. In the morning my hair is dry and my curls are stretched. To learn more about styles to beat shrinkage and show your length click here.
