I use to HATE scissors and someone even coming remotely close to them. In the beginning of my natural process, I was into the obsession of having long hair like you probably once were. Trims use to be the enemy while holding on to my straggly ends was the thing to do. One thing I’ll admit to you is I AM the WORSE at FLAT IRONING MY HAIR. It feels so good to get that out. Of course, I want to make it seem like I can do it all but as for me and flat ironing we just don’t get along. Each time, I even attempted I either can’t get the straight look or I cause some type of heat damage and trust me I’ve tried heat protectant but it just doesn’t do it for me. So, I technically quit straightening my hair and trying to recover from my last so called attempt at straightening my hair. I said this flat ironing story all to say that my last flat iron did a complete heat damage t my hair where the front of my hair which is wavy enough became thin weak and brittle. .I mean each time I brushed it or combed it hair would come out because it was so weak. I tried and tried to hang on to it but when doing twists or my new perm rod style which I talk about here. It would look tacky and just wouldn’t fit in place with the rest of my hair. At first, i would be in denial that my hair needed a trim but once I brought myself some trimming scissors and cut a little of the lifeless ends. I absolutely loved the difference it had. These are the three differences I noticed
1) My hair didn’t look as weak
My fragile ends had my twists looking lifeless. There were ends that were either straight or wouldn’t even curl and would just frizz up. Now, that my hair is trimmed and I don’t mean dusting I mean about 2 to 3 inches I absolutely love each style I do because it looks healthier.
2) Less breakage
There was a point where every time I would wash my hair there would be an over amount of shedding. At first, I thought it was only me that maybe shed more than other people. However, no it wasn’t it was another way of me holding onto my length vs thinking about the health of my hair. If you hair is coming out a little too much or having small pieces break of it might be time for you to think about your hair’s health.
3) Curls more defined and came back to life.
After awhile I thought my curls and thickness left me. I blamed everything maybe it was because I had my son or maybe it’s because I’m using the wrong products. NOPE it wasn’t none of that it was simply me not trying to pick up those scissors. Once I began researching on how to do a D.I.Y cut I started seeing my curls come back and my styles come back to life. Paging Dr. Dre gives a great example below on what to look out for when your hair is in need of a trim.
I know it might seem, great to hold on to your ends whether you’re transitioning or had some heat damage like me. However trust me it makes a world of difference I went from having thin hair that seemed like a needle in a haystack to get thick to every style looking like how I want it too.
